Chaos
A primordial force of water and chaos, angered by the greed of the echidna tribe and sealed within the Master Emerald after flooding the world millennia ago, now at peace.
Chaos is a primordial entity of pure water and energy that predates the known history of Sonic's world. Originally an innocent spirit dwelling in the oceans, it was angered when the echidna tribe, led by Pachacamac, attempted to steal the Chaos Emeralds millennia ago, transforming into a destructive force capable of reshaping reality. In response to its rampage—which had already caused a great flood—Tikal and the echidnas sealed Chaos within the Master Emerald using her power and the Chaos Emeralds. While often mistaken for a simple monster, Chaos represents the raw, untamed power of nature and the chaotic balance that exists between order and destruction in the Sonic universe.

Lore & Background
Long before the rise of civilizations or the construction of modern cities, Chaos existed as a gentle guardian of the oceans, living in harmony with nature. This peace was shattered not by Dr. Eggman, but by the echidna tribe (led by Pachacamac) who sought to exploit the Chaos Emeralds by stealing them millennia ago. Enraged by the attack on Tikal and the removal of the emeralds, Chaos mutated into a terrifying beast driven by rage and confusion. This transformation marked the beginning of its rampage, which caused a great flood. In response, Tikal used her own power and the Chaos Emeralds to seal Chaos within the Master Emerald. After being freed during Sonic Adventure, Chaos later found peace and is no longer sealed within the Master Emerald.
Reader's Guide
Chaos is not a villain by nature but a force of nature corrupted by greed. Its origins are tied directly to the Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds, which act as the keys to its power. When Dr. Eggman attempted to harness the emeralds for his own gain, he awakened Chaos from its slumber within the Master Emerald. This event triggered a series of transformations, evolving the entity through several forms until it reached its ultimate state, capable of threatening global destruction. Sonic and his friends eventually realized that defeating Chaos required more than brute force; they had to restore balance by returning the Chaos Emeralds to the Master Emerald. Once the emeralds were returned, Chaos reverted to a peaceful spirit, retreating back into the stone where it belongs. This cycle highlights a recurring theme in Sonic lore: the danger of tampering with ancient powers and the importance of respecting the natural order.
