Prior to comics, Penders worked as a commercial artist, including silk screening T-shirts at age 16, serving as a technical illustrator in the US Air Force, and as a graphics illustrator at a Boston engineering firm. He entered the comic book industry working on DC Comics' Who's Who In Star Trek miniseries in 1986 and later on Star Trek: The Next Generation comics. He also worked on DC's Captain Atom series after being a finalist in a Marvel Comics drawing contest. Penders was hired for Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic in 1993, serving as lead writer early on before focusing on the Knuckles the Echidna spin-off from 1997 until its cancellation in 2000. He resumed lead writing duties from issue #145 until leaving Archie in 2006. Outside comics, he created concept art for Motorola Razr ads and storyboarded episodes of King of the Hill and the movie Bratz: Super Babyz.
