Awonawilona

Supreme life-giving power and creator of all in Zuni myth.

Last updated

In the creation stories of the Zuni people of New Mexico, Awonawilona is the supreme life-giving power and creator of all things, a name that means "All Container." The deity has no fixed gender and is spoken of as either he or she. Awonawilona first became all forms of water, bringing into being fog, clouds, bodies of water, and air, though some versions say fog and steam already existed.

From the mix of light, clouds, and air, vegetation grew, and Awonawilona became the essence of life, forming a universe of nine layers. Later, Awonawilona took the form of the sun and created the Sun-father, who then helped shape other deities like Awitelin Tsita and Apoyan Tachu. These gods eventually led to the creation of humans and all living creatures.
