Facts from the source article.

Gameplay

World Heroes 2 Jet shares many elements with its predecessor, including a three-out-of-four-button layout: A for punch, B for kick, and C for throw or Challenge (taunting). Movements and motion commands use an 8-way joystick. New additions include three new characters and modified moves and fighting statistics for returning characters. The word "Jet" refers to faster movement and the ability to dash forward and backward. When two attacks hit each other, they rebound. The modes "Normal Game" and "Death Match" are replaced by "Entry to the tournament" and "The FORGING OF WARRIORS". In "Entry to the tournament", the player faces four groups of three opponents, defeats Captain Kidd in at least two of three rounds, then Hanzou similarly, and finally Zeus' henchmen Jack and Ryofu before Zeus. In "The FORGING OF WARRIORS", the player selects an opponent and wins two out of three rounds; if the timer expires, the fuller lifebar wins. After winning or losing, the player returns to the select screens. Winning four opponents in a row ends the game. This mode allows two-player versus. The stage is the second character's stage from World Heroes 2, or for new characters, their stages exclusive to this mode.

Plot

After Dio and Neo Geegus were defeated in World Heroes 2, the 14 fighters returned to their time periods. One year later, they receive invitations to a new tournament called the World Heroes Battle Fest, held over five days in different parts of the world and watched by millions. The fighters learn that Dr. Brown is not the sponsor; instead, a mysterious millionaire known as Mr. Z is behind it. Mr. Z has a callous ambition for world domination and, with his two loyal servants, vows to eliminate anyone who gets in his way.

Ports and related releases

World Heroes 2 Jet was ported to the Neo Geo AES in Japan and North America on June 10, 1994. It was ported to the Neo Geo CD exclusively in Japan by ADK on November 11, 1994. It became the first and only series title ported to a handheld, reprogrammed by Betop and published by Takara for the Nintendo Game Boy with Super Game Boy features; characters appear super deformed. This port was released in Japan on February 24, 1995, as part of Takara's series of Game Boy conversions of arcade fighting games. It was released in North America by Playmates Interactive in August 1995 without "Nettou" in the title. On October 18, 2007, SNK Playmore added it to the arcade compilation for PlayStation 2 in Japan, published in North America on March 11, 2008, and Europe on November 7, 2008, as World Heroes Anthology. The compilation was reprinted as "The Best" in Japan on June 18, 2009, and also released on the Wii Virtual Console.

Reception

In Japan, Game Machine listed World Heroes 2 Jet as the third most-successful table arcade unit in its June 1, 1994 issue. In North America, RePlay reported it as the fifth most-popular arcade game, and Play Meter listed it as the twenty-eighth most-popular. Electronic Gaming Monthly gave the Neo Geo version "Game of the Month" and "Editors' Choice Gold" awards, citing sharp graphics, stereo sound, improved controls, and added features. GamePro praised the tournament mode and new moves but criticized the absence of death match mode and slow-paced gameplay, concluding it lacked defining elements of an SF II-quality game. Electronic Gaming Monthly and GamePro both gave the Game Boy version rave reviews, with EGM's Sushi-X expressing surprise that a fighting game worked on portables. Both magazines noted sounds as a weak point and applauded the inclusion of all characters, attractive graphics, and responsive controls.
