Gameplay

Viewpoint is Sammy's only game for the Neo-Geo Multi Video System. By default, players take turns; simultaneous play can be enabled in Service Mode. The ship has primary weapons and three bombs: a wave of fire scrolling upward, a circular nova-like blast, and homing mini-missiles. The game contains six stages.

Development and release

Aicom, known for The Legendary Axe and The Astyanax, developed Viewpoint. Sammy published it in November 1992, marking its first market foray since the early 1980s. The isometric scrolling was inspired by Sega's Zaxxon, with aesthetic influences from Xevious and R-Type. All 3D graphics were hand-drawn. Home ports appeared on Genesis, PlayStation, X68000, and FM Towns. The Genesis version debuted internationally on the Genesis Mini 2 in October 2022. Ports for Saturn and Game Boy Color were cancelled.

Reception

In April 1993, RePlay ranked Viewpoint the fifteenth most-popular arcade game in North America. The Neo Geo version earned critical acclaim: Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it Best Graphics and Best Music in its 1992 awards. Famicom Tsūshin scored it 30 out of 40. Computer and Video Games rated it 95%, and Sinclair User gave 96%. GameFan reviewers scored the Neo Geo console version 99.5% and 99%, calling it the best game on the system. GamePro awarded full 5s in all four categories. Later ports were divisive. Electronic Gaming Monthly's five reviewers scored the Genesis version 8, 6, 7, 7, and 7 out of 10, noting slowdown and inferior music but calling it a good conversion. Next Generation praised it as an exceptionally good port for a less powerful system, but criticized the game itself for dull, redundant level designs.
