World Heroes
A time-traveling fighting series from ADK and SNK.
World Heroes is a series of four fighting games created by ADK with assistance from SNK for the Neo Geo family of arcade and home consoles. The series features a tournament organized by a scientist, Dr. Brown, who uses a perfected time machine to bring together various historical and fictional fighters from across time to compete. The games were ported to platforms such as the Super NES and Sega Saturn, and a fifth title, World Heroes Pocket, was announced for the Neo Geo Pocket but later canceled.

Lore & Background
The series' general premise involves Dr. Brown, a scientist who has perfected a time machine, organizing a tournament for various 'World Heroes' throughout history to engage in combat. Many fighters are based on actual historical figures, such as Hattori Hanzō, Fūma Kotarō, Rasputin, Janne D'Arc, and J. Carn (loosely based on Genghis Khan), while others are fictional, like the android Brocken and the cyborg Geegus. The gameplay is similar to other fighting games but uses a 3-button layout in the original, with punch, kick, and throw buttons; holding buttons delivers stronger attacks, akin to the first Street Fighter. Later games allowed assigning four basic attacks to different buttons, and World Heroes 2 Jet introduced an ABC Special Move activated by pressing A, B, and C simultaneously, with effects varying by character.
Reader's Guide
World Heroes is significant as a Neo Geo fighting game series that blended historical figures with arcade combat, featuring a distinctive 'Death Match' mode with arena traps inspired by Japanese deathmatch professional wrestling. The series influenced later ADK titles, with characters like Fūma Kotarō appearing in Aggressors of Dark Kombat, and all characters featured in the Neo Geo CD-exclusive ADK World. After ADK's bankruptcy, SNK Playmore acquired the intellectual property, leading to appearances of World Heroes characters in NeoGeo Battle Coliseum, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters DS, and SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. The series' legacy includes its unique control scheme and the canceled World Heroes Pocket, marking the end of ADK's original development.
