A crossover card game series from SNK and Capcom.

SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters

SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters is a series of digital collectible card games developed by SNK (the first two games) and SNK Playmore (the third game), released between 1999 and 2006 for handheld consoles. Spun off from the popular SNK vs. Capcom fighting game series, the games feature cards based on characters from various Capcom and SNK titles, such as Street Fighter and The King of Fighters. The series includes three main entries: two for the Neo Geo Pocket Color and one for the Nintendo DS.

Lore & Background

The first game, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters' Clash, was released in 1999 for the Neo Geo Pocket Color, following the earlier crossover SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium (also 1999). It featured characters illustrated in a super deformed art style and came in two complementary versions: SNK and Capcom, each with different starting decks and exclusive cards. Gameplay resembled a simplified version of Magic: The Gathering, with a maximum of three fighters per side and Special Points used for Action Cards and combined attacks. The game received an emulated re-release for Nintendo Switch in January 2022, later included in the Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Vol. 2 compilation in November 2022.

The sequel, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters 2 Expand Edition, was released in Japan in 2001 for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. It added 124 new cards to the original 240 character and 60 action cards, introducing characters from games like Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Mega Man Legends. It also included 40 Reaction cards and special character cards with regular artwork. This was the last game released for the Neo Geo Pocket Color in Japan.

The third entry, SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters DS, was released for the Nintendo DS in Japan in December 2006 and in the United States in April 2007. It added ADK characters and newcomers like Dante and Phoenix Wright, but omitted Power Stone characters. The American version suffered a game-breaking bug on the ninth floor of the tower during the second playthrough, causing a crash. SNK issued a recall in June 2007, replacing cartridges with fixed versions that featured a black-and-white label graphic.

Reader's Guide

The SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters series holds significance as a crossover card game franchise that brought together characters from two major fighting game universes. The first game, Card Fighters' Clash, was well received and is remembered for its accessible yet strategic gameplay, often compared to a simplified Magic: The Gathering. Its re-release on Nintendo Switch in 2022 helped introduce the series to a new audience. The sequel, Expand Edition, expanded the card pool and introduced new mechanics like Reaction cards, but remained Japan-only, limiting its reach. The third game, Card Fighters DS, was marred by a critical bug in its American release, leading to poor reviews and a recall. Despite this, the series as a whole is noted for its role in the early days of digital collectible card games on handhelds and for preserving the crossover appeal of SNK and Capcom properties. The fan translation of the second game and the emulated re-release of the first have helped maintain interest among collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts.
