Snake Core

A snake-shooter hybrid where soldiers grow and fight aliens.

Snake Core

Snake Core, a hybrid of snake and shooter genres, was created by the Dutch developer OrangePixel. Players aim to defeat the Alien Overlord, known as "The End Boss." The game’s setting falls between the company’s other titles, Groundskeeper and Ashworld.

In gameplay, the player commands a line of soldiers that expands through a recruitment system. Like in Snake, hitting walls kills the soldiers. The soldiers automatically fire at aliens and bombs within their range. Players must also defuse bombs and protect key locations. Power-ups allow soldier upgrades. The game includes multiple modes and routes selected via a node system, with routes that differ significantly.

OrangePixel announced Snake Core on March 2, 2020. It launched for iOS on March 25, 2020, and for Android on April 8, 2020. A Nintendo Switch version followed on February 23, 2023, and the game is also available on Steam.

In 2021, Snake Core received a nomination for the PG Awards. Pocket Gamer placed it third on a list of mobile games similar to Snake.

Lore & Background

Snake Core was first announced by OrangePixel on 2 March 2020. The game was released for iOS on 25 March 2020, with its Android release following on 8 April 2020. A Nintendo Switch version was released on 23 February 2023, and the game is also available for download on Steam.

The player controls a line of soldiers that gets bigger through a recruiting mechanism. Similarly to Snake, the player must avoid hitting the walls, otherwise the soldiers will die. The soldiers automatically shoot aliens and bombs inside their range. The player must also defuse bombs and defend important locations. It is possible to upgrade the soldiers through power-ups. The game features several game modes and routes that can be chosen through a node system, with routes being very distinct from each other.

Reader's Guide

Snake Core is notable for blending classic Snake mechanics with shooter elements, creating a unique gameplay loop where the player's line of soldiers grows through recruitment and automatically engages enemies. The game's node system offers distinct routes and multiple game modes, adding replayability. In 2021, Snake Core was a nominee for the PG Awards, and Pocket Gamer ranked it third on a list of mobile games that resemble Snake. Its release across iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, and Steam demonstrates OrangePixel's multi-platform approach. The game's setting between Groundskeeper and Ashworld ties it into the developer's broader fictional universe, though the article provides no further details on that connection.
