Kanagawa Interhigh Tournament
The crucible where Shohoku earned their ticket to the nation.
The Kanagawa Interhigh Tournament is the prefectural qualifying stage for the National High School Basketball Championship. Shohoku High School, long regarded as an underdog and a one-man team solely dependent on captain Takenori Akagi, with no competition success even at the prefectural level for two years running, begins to turn things around in Akagi's third and final year. They are the only non-seeded team to make it to the final four of the tournament, their sole loss being against eventual prefecture champion Kainan. Despite being the runner-up representative for Kanagawa, they are ranked as a C-class team and placed into a tough tournament bracket during the national championship.

In the match against Kainan during the Kanagawa Interhigh Tournament, Akagi played on despite a serious injury to his ankle. Shohoku lost to Kainan by a narrow margin of 2 points, with the match's final score 90–88. Sakuragi cried after this loss, and Akagi consoled him. Before the final four of the tournament, four Shohoku starters had to beg their teachers to retake exams they had flunked, otherwise they would have been academically disqualified from playing in the national championship. Akagi, together with Ayako and Haruko, helped them review for their make-up exams, which they passed.
