Skins Rise
Final episode of Skins, following James Cook in Manchester's criminal underworld.
Last updated
Cook works as a drug peddler in Manchester's criminal underworld, appearing more subdued and serious than in his past.[1] In the episode "Skins Rise", the character Cook is depicted as living in Manchester while trying to stay hidden from both law enforcement and the broader community.[1]
Making and release
The episode presents Cook as still haunted by the death and betrayal from his teenage years.[2] Preece of Den of Geek described "Rise" as a traditional crime drama, unlike the earlier specials "Fire" and "Pure."[2] Cornish of WhatCulture noted that the episode features Cook's first voiceover in the series, though it only appears in the opening scenes.[3] The Manchester driving shots were praised as well-shot but somewhat repetitive.[3]
The episode includes what Cornish called Skins' most graphic violent scene, showing Louie casually sitting while an accomplice murders Jason.[3] Preece stated that "Rise" can be enjoyed by viewers regardless of their familiarity with the series.[2] James T. Cornish of WhatCulture commended Liam Boyle's acting, stating that Boyle "really helps to flesh out the character and make him feel like a potent threat."[4][3]
What the cited sources add
Cornish noted that Jason's murder benefits from decent foreshadowing throughout the episode.[3] Preece suggested the episode would split opinion but praised its creative strength.[2] Cornish reported that the next episode would involve Cook, his girlfriend Emma, and Charlie going on the run from Louie.[3]
