Playing career
Axel Holmström began his junior career with Skellefteå AIK's J20 SuperElit squad in 2013–14, putting up 15 goals and 23 assists over 33 games while also getting into four games with the senior team. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked him 90th among European skaters for the 2014 draft. The next season, he tallied ten goals and ten assists in 44 regular-season games, tying for second among SHL junior-aged players in scoring. He helped Skellefteå reach the SHL Finals and led the playoffs with seven goals and 11 assists in 15 games, setting a new league record for postseason points by a junior, surpassing the mark held by Daniel and Henrik Sedin. In June 2015, the Detroit Red Wings signed him to a three-year entry-level contract. Injuries limited him to one goal and one assist in 16 games during the 2016–17 regular season, but he led his team in playoff scoring with three goals and four assists in seven games. He was reassigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins in April 2017. During the 2018–19 season, he recorded 12 goals and 13 assists in 65 games for the Griffins. Holmström returned to Sweden in April 2019, signing a two-year deal with HV71 of the SHL.
International play
Holmström represented Sweden at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, recording one assist in four games. At the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championships, he was the tournament's second-leading scorer with three goals and eight assists in seven games. He played for Sweden at the 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, posting one goal and six assists in seven games, and again at the 2016 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where he recorded one goal and five assists in seven games.
