Playing career
Adam Mascherin got his start in Ontario hockey with the Georgetown Raiders in the OJHL and the Vaughan Kings Minor Midget squad in the GTHL. In the 2013-14 season, he put up 67 goals and 62 assists over 61 games, earning the GTHL's Player of the Year Award. He has said he tried to pattern his game after Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos. During his minor hockey days, Mascherin would rely on his twin brother for intel on opposing goalies while scouting other teams.
After that season, the Kitchener Rangers selected him second overall in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection. Before the draft, one scout called him "one of the purest goal scorers that I have seen in a number of years." Rangers head coach Troy Smith praised his shooting, saying Mascherin has "a world-class shot with a world-class release." He committed to the Rangers for 2014-15. Before that season, he attended Canada's national under-17 development camp and made the Team Canada Red roster for the 2014 World U-17 Hockey Challenge. Coach Smith and his staff shifted Mascherin from his natural centre position to left wing to help him generate more offence. In his rookie year, he scored 12 goals and 29 points in 62 games, winning the team's Michael Pappert Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year and landing a spot on the OHL's Second All-Rookie Team.
Mascherin broke out in his sophomore season, notching points in his first 11 games. An injury in his 12th game sidelined him briefly, but he returned and kept producing. By December, he was second on the team in scoring with 14 goals and 20 assists, finishing the year with 81 points in 61 games. That performance earned him a 42nd ranking among North American skaters for the 2016 NHL draft by the Central Scouting Bureau. Some scouts later argued that his height was the reason for that relatively low ranking. He ended the season with the Les Bradley Memorial Award as the Most Improved Player and the Jim Reilly Trophy as the Team Scoring Leader.
