2007 Six Nations Championship

France edge Ireland on points difference; Italy win two for the first time.

The 2007 Six Nations Championship was the eighth series of the rugby union Six Nations Championship and, including the previous incarnations as the Home Nations and Five Nations, the 113th series of the international championship. Fifteen matches were played over five weekends from 3 February to 17 March, and France again won on points difference above Ireland after four teams had at least a mathematical chance of topping the table going into the final week.

Background

Italy had their first away win in the tournament, beating Scotland 37–17 in Edinburgh, and for the first time won two matches, going on to beat Wales 23–20 in Rome and finishing fourth, their best result so far; Scotland took the wooden spoon on points difference below Wales, and Ireland won the Triple Crown for the second straight year and the third time in four years. After Round 4 every team had lost at least once, so no Grand Slam was possible.

The opening match, on 3 February 2007 at the Stadio Flaminio in Rome, saw France beat Italy 39–3 in front of 24,973, with tries from Christophe Dominici (23'), Cédric Heymans (30'), Sébastien Chabal (40', 44') and Yannick Jauzion (63'), four conversions by David Skrela and penalties by Skrela and Lionel Beauxis against a single Ramiro Pez penalty, refereed by Wayne Barnes of England; it was the first match for the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy. On the final day Ireland beat Italy 51–24 in Rome, leaving France needing to beat Scotland by 23 points, which they did.
