Last updated

The series is an Australian children's animated television adaptation of Sam McBratney's picture book series.[1] It follows the adventures of a hare family and their woodland friends in a forest home.[2][3] The show's central theme is love, which is explored through Little Nutbrown Hare's bond with his father.[3]

Making and release

SLR Productions acquired the rights to adapt the picture book into a television series in 2010.[4] Scrawl Studios joined as a co-producer with funding from the Media Development Authority of Singapore.[5] The first season consisted of 52 episodes each 11 minutes long.[6] ABC4Kids commissioned a second season of 26 episodes in 2014.[7]

KiKa and Hessischer Rundfunk returned as co-producers for the second season.[7] 9 Story Media Group handled worldwide distribution for the second season after acquiring CCI's library.[8] Top Draw Animation provided animation services for the second season.[9] CCI Entertainment secured the rights to distribute the series globally, with the exception of Australia, New Zealand, and South East Asia.[10]

What the cited sources add

The Common Sense Media review describes the series as an endearing preschool show based on the picture book.[3] It notes that the series stays true to the book's watercolor-style animation.[3] C21Media stated that the picture book had sold 22 million copies worldwide before the adaptation.[2] The review highlights Big Nutbrown Hare as a wonderful role model for his son.[3]

The Media Development Authority's Chief Executive Officer, Dr Christopher Chia, stated that this was the first animated series co-produced under the Australia-Singapore Co-production Agreement.[5]
