Making and release

The World War II setting was chosen after deciding on Jonathan Morris as the main character.[3] The developers incorporated outdoor settings within Brauner's paintings to avoid creating only indoor stages.[3] Konami revealed the game's title and World War II setting on April 21, 2006.[4] The development group behind Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, under producer Koji Igarashi, also created Portrait of Ruin.[5]

Roughly 16 months were spent on the game's planning and production.[6] Igarashi's decision to target the Nintendo DS came from his belief that home console purchasers at that time only bought 3D games.[7] The game uses a graphics-enhanced version of the engine from Dawn of Sorrow.[8][9] Michiru Yamane returned as composer, and Yuzo Koshiro contributed additional tracks.[10]

The title was launched as part of the Castlevania series' 20th anniversary celebration.[11]

What the cited sources add

An IGN interview with Koji Igarashi confirms that the story's hero was selected early in production.[12][11] Igarashi stated that the hero's use of the Vampire Killer whip was because the game marked the series' 20th anniversary.[11] Burman wrote that the refined gameplay and "epic" boss fights compensate for that linearity.[13][14]
