Whitehall is the London government district where Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's elder brother, works. His regular routine is to walk round the corner to Whitehall each morning and back to Pall Mall in the evening.

Mycroft is a government official, and in The Bruce-Partington Plans Sherlock tells Watson that his brother's part in the government is far more substantial than auditing its books. The first headquarters of the Metropolitan Police stood at 4 Whitehall Place, with its public entrance on the street called Great Scotland Yard, which is how Scotland Yard got its name.
