Background
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, with Noomi Rapace as the fortune-teller Madame Simza Heron, Jared Harris as Professor Moriarty, Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler. Kieran Mulroney and Michele Mulroney wrote the screenplay.
The story is original but draws on Conan Doyle's The Final Problem and The Adventure of the Empty House. In 1891, bombings blamed on radicals push France and Germany toward war, and Holmes links them to Moriarty. With Simza, Holmes and Watson travel across Europe to stop Moriarty's plot to start a major European conflict.
Reviews were mostly mixed, praising the action and the performances of Downey, Law and Harris, but the film was a commercial success, grossing over $543 million worldwide.
