Athelney Jones

The Scotland Yard inspector of The Sign of the Four.

Inspector Athelney Jones is a Scotland Yard detective who appears in The Sign of the Four. In that novel Holmes says that being out of his depth is the normal state of Lestrade, and of Inspectors Gregson and Athelney Jones with him. Several scholars have theorised that he and Peter Jones, the "official police agent" of "The Red-Headed League", are the same person; Peter Jones is similar in character and speaks of "that business of the Sholto murder and the Agra treasure".

Athelney Jones was played by Emrys James in the 1987 Granada adaptation and by Michel Perron in the 2001 Hallmark adaptation. In "The Further Adventures" (2019), the first episode of the seventh season of Elementary, Holmes and Watson work as consulting detectives for Scotland Yard with DCI Athelney Jones, portrayed by Tamsin Greig. On radio, Siôn Probert played him in two episodes of the BBC series The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
