Background
For the third time, two clubs from the same country met in the UEFA Super Cup, following the all-Italian editions of 1990 and 1993. Barcelona appeared for the sixth time, having qualified by winning the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League, where they beat first-time finalists Arsenal 2–1 at the Stade de France in Paris. Their first three Super Cup appearances, as UEFA Cup Winners' Cup winners in 1979, 1982 and 1989, all ended in defeat. After winning their first European Cup in 1992, Barcelona claimed the Super Cup on their fourth attempt, defeating Werder Bremen 3–2 on aggregate, and added a second Super Cup in 1997 as UEFA Cup Winners' Cup holders against Borussia Dortmund.
Sevilla made their Super Cup debut after winning the 2005–06 UEFA Cup with a 4–0 victory over Middlesbrough in the final at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven, a triumph achieved in their sixth UEFA Cup campaign. The clubs had met only once before in European competition, in the third round of the 1995–96 UEFA Cup, which Barcelona won 4–2 on aggregate.
