History
The first football team in Paternò is generally believed to have been established in 1908. Following promotion, Paternò attempted to win the league and advance to Serie C, fielding players such as Gaetano Troja, who later played Serie A with Palermo, and goalkeeper Marcello Trevisan, who later played for Napoli. In the 1965–66 season, Paternò placed first with a one-point lead over Massiminiana but lost the final match, allowing Massiminiana to overtake them and advance to Serie C. In 1976–77, Paternò was relegated to Promozione but returned to Serie D the following year.
The last promotion for Polisportiva Paternò came in 1985/1986; the old club ended in 1989/1990. A new club, Associazione Sportiva Paternò Calcio, was founded the following year and reached Eccellenza in 1993/1994. Paternò returned to Serie D in 2000–01 after winning the 1999–2000 Eastern Sicilian Eccellenza round. With coach Pasquale Marino, the team won the Serie D league and earned promotion to Serie C2 for the first time.
In their first Serie C2 campaign, Paternò finished third, then defeated S.S.C. Giugliano in the playoff semi-finals and Foggia in the finals, gaining a third consecutive promotion. The 2002–03 Serie C1 campaign ended with a relegation playoff defeat to L'Aquila, but the team was readmitted due to league vacancies. The 2003–2004 season, under Maurizio Pellegrino, ended in relegation after playoffs to Vis Pesaro, and the club declared bankruptcy that summer.
The new club, with the current denomination, was admitted to Promozione and reached Serie D in 2006, but was relegated back to Eccellenza in 2008 after losing in the playoffs. In the summer of 2011, it was renamed A.S.D. Paternò 2011.
