The Tanfoglio Force was introduced in 1997 as a polymer frame version of the Tanfoglio T95 Combat/Standard steel frame models, which themselves are clones of the CZ-75. A redesigned frame model, the Force 99, appeared in 1999. The pistol uses a short recoil, locked breech system with a Browning Hi-Power style linkless design. Unlike most semi-automatic pistols, the slide rides inside the frame rails, similar to the SIG P210, providing a tight fit and good accuracy. Most variants are capable of single- and double-action fire and feature an ambidextrous frame-mounted manual safety that locks the sear, as well as an internal firing pin block. The manual safety allows condition-one carry. A slide-mounted safety/decocker lever is available as a factory option for the Force 99. Since 2006, all Force models include an integral MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail for accessories.

The Force is offered in full-sized, compact, and subcompact frame sizes. Variants include the Force, Force Sport, Force Compact, Force Carry, Force Carry R Police, and Force Carry F Pro. The Force Carry R Police and Force Carry F Pro are hybrid designs with a polymer frame and a polished steel slide. The Force 22L variant uses a standard-sized polymer/aluminum combination frame. Most variants have fixed iron sights with three dots; some have adjustable competition sights. The pistol uses double-stack magazines, with capacities varying by caliber and variant. In newer pistols, the magazine is positioned 2 mm higher to improve feeding.

The Tanfoglio Force's primary significance lies in its rapid caliber interchangeability, a feature that distinguishes it from the CZ-75. By swapping the barrel, slide, and spring assembly, a user can change between 9×19mm Parabellum, 9×21mm, .38 Super Auto, .40 S&W, 10mm Auto, .45 ACP, and .22 Long Rifle in seconds, all on a single registered lower receiver. This allows practice with inexpensive .22 Long Rifle ammunition and then conversion to a defensive or competition caliber without altering ergonomics or trigger feel. The interchangeable top ends also allow different slide/barrel lengths to be mounted on the same frame. The Force is one of the few production semi-automatic pistols available in 10mm Auto. Its polymer frame reduces weight compared to steel versions, though the magazine width can be uncomfortable for shooters with smaller hands; aftermarket grips can address this. Accuracy out of the box is similar to other semi-automatic pistols costing hundreds of US dollars more. Accurized variants such as the Gold, Gold Match, Limited, and Combat Sport (known as Witness Elite in the United States) are also produced.
