Playing career

Wilson's Barrington, Illinois Little League team placed third in the 1981 Little League World Series. At Barrington High School, he compiled a 27–1 win–loss record as a pitcher over his final two seasons and also played catcher. The New York Mets selected him in the 26th round of the 1987 MLB draft, but he did not sign and instead attended the University of Minnesota. In 1988, he pitched in an NCAA Tournament Regional game and batted .347, then played summer ball with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

After that summer, he stopped pitching to focus on catching. He was named second-team All-Big Ten in 1989 and played for the U.S. Collegiate National Team, batting .325. As a junior, he hit .370 and earned first-team All-American honors. The Cincinnati Reds chose him seventh overall in the first round of the 1990 draft.

He debuted in the majors on September 7, 1992, and two days later recorded his first hit, a single off Tom Glavine. Wilson made the Reds' Opening Day roster in 1993 as a backup catcher. Over parts of two seasons with Cincinnati, he batted .257 with 11 RBI in 48 games.

Career statistics

Over 14 major league seasons, Wilson appeared in 1,299 games, batting .262 with 88 home runs and 519 runs batted in. His .995 fielding percentage was the highest for an American League catcher and sixth highest in major league history. He set an AL record for catchers with 1,051 putouts in 1997 and led AL catchers multiple times in fielding percentage, putouts, baserunners caught stealing, and range factor. In 2001, he committed only one error in 122 games for a .9987 fielding percentage.

Post-playing career

Wilson was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame in July 2012. That year, he began working as a color commentator for Mariners broadcasts on Root Sports, calling both Félix Hernández's perfect game on August 15, 2012, and a combined no-hitter on June 8, 2012. In November 2013, he became the team's minor league catching coordinator. On August 22, 2024, the Mariners hired Wilson as manager after firing Scott Servais. The team was eliminated from postseason contention on September 26. In 2025, Wilson led Seattle to the American League West title, their first division crown since 2001. The Mariners defeated the Detroit Tigers 3–2 in the ALDS and lost the American League Championship Series in seven games.
