Ice hockey in Seattle

Seattle's ice hockey history spans over a century.

Professional ice hockey arrived in Seattle in 1915 with the Seattle Metropolitans, who became the first U.S.-based club to win the Stanley Cup. Since 1944, the region has fielded teams in various iterations of the Western Hockey League, including the major junior Seattle Thunderbirds and Everett Silvertips. Today, Seattle is home to an NHL team, the Seattle Kraken, which debuted in the 2021–22 season, and a PWHL team, the Seattle Torrent, which started play in the 2025–26 season. The Puget Sound area also has a history of minor-league and junior teams in cities like Everett and Tacoma.

Background

Professional ice hockey in Seattle dates back to 1915, with the formation of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association's Seattle Metropolitans. The Metropolitans became the first United States–based team to win the Stanley Cup. As early as January 1916, Frank Patrick and Lester Patrick discussed forming a women's league to complement the PCHA. In January 1917, wives of the Seattle Metropolitans assembled a team known as the Seattle Hockeyettes, which participated in local tournament play. The Seattle Vamps, also occasionally referred to as the Seattle Sweeties, were a women's ice hockey team that competed in the 1921 International Ladies' Hockey League season, the world's first women's tournament to include entrants from multiple nations. The Vamps played against the Vancouver Amazons and Victoria Kewpies, and their goaltender was Mildren Terran. After the 1921 season, the Vamps and the Kewpies ceased operations.

The closure of the Seattle Ice Arena in 1924 ended the Metropolitans' existence. The Civic Ice Arena was completed in 1928, and with it came the return of professional hockey. The Seattle Eskimos were a professional team from 1928 to 1931, founded by former Metropolitans manager Pete Muldoon. The Seattle Sea Hawks began as a founding member of the North West Hockey League. The Seattle Stars, also known as Sick's Stars, played during the final iteration of the PCHL's inaugural 1944–45 season. The Seattle Totems played from 1944 to 1975. Failed attempts to acquire an NHL team occurred from 1974 to 2017, including a 1974 expansion offer that was rescinded, and a 1990 bid that failed due to financial terms.
