History
The club was formed in 1906 when a deputation from the Forfarshire Football Association met with local representatives at the Temperance Hall in City Road and persuaded them to merge two junior sides, Brechin Harp and Brechin Hearts, into a single senior club. Brechin Harp folded, but Brechin Hearts continued as a junior side until the Great War. The club won its first major local honour, the Forfarshire Cup, in 1909–10 with a team that included nine players from the town. Glebe Park became the home ground in 1919; the stadium now has a capacity of 4,123 with 1,519 seats and is noted for a hedge along one side of the pitch. Brechin City entered the Scottish League in 1923 when the original Third Division was formed, but finished bottom that season and disappeared from the League at the end of 1925–26 along with most other teams in that division. The club returned for 1929–30 after Bathgate and Arthurlie left, again finishing last. Throughout the 1930s the team struggled in the lower half of the Second Division, suffering heavy defeats including 10–0 losses to Cowdenbeath, Albion Rovers and Airdrieonians in 1937–38. During the Second World War the club went into hibernation. It resumed in 1946–47 in the C Division, a competition that mixed first teams and reserve sides and did not grant full League membership. Success in the North-East section of the restructured division in 1953–54 brought a return to full League membership, though the first season back ended with another bottom-place finish without relegation. The late 1950s became a prosperous period: the club achieved four consecutive top-half finishes without promotion and reached the semi-finals of the 1957–58 Scottish League Cup.
