Nicolaus Copernicus

Nicolaus Copernicus, who lived from 1473 to 1543, was a Renaissance scholar active in many fields. He is best known for creating a model of the cosmos with the Sun, not the Earth, at its center. His book *De revolutionibus orbium coelestium* (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), published shortly before his death, marked a turning point in science. It sparked the Copernican Revolution and helped launch the broader Scientific Revolution. A similar Sun-centered idea had been proposed eighteen centuries earlier by the Greek astronomer Aristarchus of Samos, but Copernicus probably developed his version on his own.

Born and buried in Royal Prussia—a multilingual, semi-autonomous region within the Kingdom of Poland, reclaimed from the Teutonic Order after the Thirteen Years' War—Copernicus was a polyglot and polymath. He earned a doctorate in canon law and worked as a mathematician, astronomer, physician, classics scholar, translator, governor, diplomat, and economist. In 1497 he became a canon of the Warmian Cathedral chapter. In 1517 he developed a quantity theory of money, a key economic concept, and two years later he articulated a principle later known as Gresham's law.

**Life**

Copernicus was born on 19 February 1473 in Toruń (Thorn), a city in Royal Prussia within the Polish Crown, to German-speaking parents. His father, a merchant from Kraków, and his mother, the daughter of a wealthy Toruń merchant, had four children, with Nicolaus as the youngest. His brother Andreas became an Augustinian canon at Frombork (Frauenburg). His sister Barbara, named after their mother, became a Benedictine nun and eventually prioress of a convent in Chełmno (Kulm); she died after 1517. His other sister, Katharina, married Toruń businessman and councilor Barthel Gertner, leaving five children whom Copernicus cared for until his death. Copernicus never married and had no known children, but from at least 1531 to 1539 his relationship with his live-in housekeeper, Anna Schilling, was considered scandalous by two Warmian bishops, who repeatedly urged him to end the affair.

**Father's family**

Copernicus's paternal family originally moved to Silesia in the thirteenth century. Their roots trace to a village between Nysa (Neiße) and Prudnik (Neustadt), known by various spellings: Kopernik, Copernik, Copernic, Kopernic, Coprirnik, and modern Koperniki. By the fourteenth century, family members had relocated to other Silesian cities, to Kraków (1367), and to Toruń (1400). In 1396, Niklas Koppernigk, the astronomer's great-great-grandfather, became a burgher of Kraków. His father, also named Niklas Koppernigk—likely the son of Jan (or Johann)—first appears in Kraków records in 1448. Nicolaus was named after this father, who is first recorded as a wealthy copper merchant, mostly selling in Danzig (Gdańsk). He moved from Kraków to Toruń around 1458. At that time, Toruń, on the Vistula River, was caught up in the Thirteen Years' War, in which the Kingdom of Poland and the Prussian Confederation (an alliance of Prussian cities, gentry, and clergy) fought the Teutonic Order for control of the region. Hanseatic cities like Danzig and Toruń backed the Polish King, Casimir IV Jagiellon, who promised to respect their traditional independence—something the Teutonic Order had challenged. Nicolaus's father was politically active, supporting Poland and the cities against the Order. In 1454 he mediated negotiations between Poland's Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki and the Prussian cities over repaying war loans. The Second Peace of Thorn (1466) forced the Teutonic Order to give up all claims to the conquered lands, which returned to Poland as Royal Prussia, remaining part of it until the First (1772) and Second (1793) Partitions. Copernicus's father married Barbara Watzenrode, the astronomer's mother, between 1461 and 1464, and died around 1483.

**Mother's family**

Nicolaus's mother, Barbara Watzenrode, was the daughter of Lucas Watzenrode the Elder (died 1462), a wealthy Toruń patrician and city councillor, and Katarzyna (widow of Jan Peckau), also recorded as Katarzyna Rüdiger gente Modlibóg (died 1476). The Modlibógs were a prominent Polish family known in Poland's history since 1271. The Watzenrode family, like the Koperniks, came from Silesia near Schweidnitz (Świdnica) and settled in Toruń after 1360. They quickly became one of the wealthiest and most influential patrician families. Through the Watzenrodes' extensive marriage connections, Copernicus was related to wealthy families in Toruń, Danzig, and Elbing (Elbląg), as well as to prominent Polish noble families of Prussia: the Czapskis, Działyńskis, Konopackis, and Kościeleckis. Lucas and Katherine had three children: Lucas Watzenrode the Younger (1447–1512), who became Bishop of Warmia and Copernicus's patron; Barbara, the astronomer's mother (died after 1495); and Christina (died before 1502), who in 1459 married Toruń merchant and mayor Tiedeman von Allen. Lucas Watzenrode the Elder, a wealthy merchant and from 1439 to 1462 president of the judicial bench, was a firm opponent of the Teutonic Knights. In 1453 he represented Toruń at the Grudziądz (Graudenz) conference that planned the uprising against them. During the Thirteen Years' War, he actively supported the Prussian cities' war effort with large monetary subsidies (only partly reclaimed later), political activity in Toruń and Danzig, and by personally fighting in battles.
