Murray Gell-Mann was a theoretical physicist from the United States whose work was central to understanding elementary particles. He is best known for proposing quarks as the basic constituents of particles that interact via the strong force, and for establishing the renormalization group as a key tool in quantum field theory and statistical mechanics. In 1969, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on classifying elementary particles and their interactions. He also helped develop the idea of chirality in weak interactions and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in strong interactions, and in the 1970s he was a co-creator of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), which describes how quarks are confined inside mesons and baryons and is a major part of the Standard Model.

Gell-Mann was born in Lower Manhattan to Jewish immigrant parents from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, specifically from what is now Czernowitz, Ukraine. His father, Arthur Isidore Gelman, taught English as a second language, and his mother was Pauline Reichstein. He married J. Margaret Dow in 1955; they had two children. After Margaret died in 1981, he married Marcia Southwick in 1992, gaining a stepson. At age 14, he graduated as valedictorian from Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School and entered Yale College, where he was part of Jonathan Edwards College. In 1947, he was on Yale’s team for the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition, which won second prize. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Yale in 1948. Wanting to stay in the Ivy League for graduate school, he applied to Princeton and Harvard but was rejected by Princeton and could not get financial aid from Harvard. He then accepted an offer from MIT, urged by Victor Weisskopf to become his research assistant, which provided the needed funding. Unaware of MIT’s strong reputation in physics, Gell-Mann was deeply unhappy and said he initially considered suicide. He completed his Ph.D. at MIT in 1951, writing a dissertation on "Coupling strength and nuclear reactions" under Weisskopf. Afterward, he did postdoctoral work at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, then served as a visiting research professor at the University of Illinois from 1952 to 1953. He was a visiting associate professor at Columbia and an associate professor at the University of Chicago before moving to the California Institute of Technology in 1955, where he taught until retiring in 1993. He died at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on May 24, 2019.

Professionally, Gell-Mann held the title of Robert Andrews Millikan Professor of Theoretical Physics Emeritus at Caltech, and also taught as a university professor at the University of New Mexico and as Presidential Professor of Physics and Medicine at the University of Southern California. He served on the editorial board of the Encyclopædia Britannica. He spent the 1958–1959 academic year on sabbatical at the Collège de France and had several stints at CERN, including as a Guggenheim Fellow and, in 1972, as a visiting professor. In 1972, he faced criticism for his involvement with JASON, a scientific advisory group that supported the U.S. Department of Defense during the Vietnam War, which led to protests in France and Italy. In 1984, he helped co-found the Santa Fe Institute, a nonprofit research center focused on complex systems and interdisciplinary complexity theory. His 1994 book *The Quark and the Jaguar* acknowledged financial support from Jeffrey Epstein, given through the Santa Fe Institute. In 2003, Gell-Mann contributed a letter to a birthday collection for Epstein, and in 2011 he reportedly attended a conference on Epstein’s private island. His name appeared in Epstein’s personal address book, and in 2025 Ghislaine Maxwell testified that she had introduced Gell-Mann to Epstein. George Johnson wrote a biography of Gell-Mann, *Strange Beauty*, which Gell-Mann criticized for inaccuracies, though colleagues praised it; a revised edition came out in 2023. In 2012, Gell-Mann co-authored *Mary McFadden: A Lifetime of Design, Collecting, and Adventure* with his companion Mary McFadden.
