Michael Faraday (1791–1867) was an English chemist and physicist whose work reshaped the study of electrochemistry and electromagnetism. Despite having very little formal schooling, he became one of history’s most influential scientists through his own efforts. His key discoveries include the basic principles of electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and electrolysis. By studying the magnetic field around a wire carrying direct current, Faraday introduced the idea of the electromagnetic field to physics. He also showed that magnetism could influence light, revealing a connection between the two. His work on electromagnetic rotary devices laid the groundwork for electric motors, and his contributions made electricity practical for technology. The unit of capacitance, the farad, is named after him.
As a chemist, Faraday discovered benzene and tetrachloroethylene, studied chlorine clathrate hydrate, and created an early version of the Bunsen burner. He developed the system of oxidation numbers and popularized terms like anode, cathode, electrode, and ion. He became the first Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution, a position he held for life.
Faraday was a hands-on experimenter who explained his ideas in clear, simple language. He thought about the physical world in pictures rather than in equations or symbols; his math skills did not go beyond basic algebra. Later, James Clerk Maxwell took Faraday’s work and others’ and condensed it into a set of equations that underpin all modern theories of electromagnetism. Maxwell wrote that Faraday’s use of lines of force showed him to be a mathematician of a very high order.
Faraday also devoted himself to public service. He worked to improve lighthouses and protect ships from rust. With Charles Lyell, he investigated a coal mine explosion in Haswell, County Durham, showing for the first time that coal dust made the blast worse and that better ventilation could have prevented it. He studied industrial pollution in Swansea, air pollution at the Royal Mint, and wrote to *The Times* about the foul state of the River Thames during the Great Stink. He refused to develop chemical weapons for the Crimean War, citing ethical concerns. He declined to have his lectures published, wanting people to recreate the experiments themselves, and told a publisher, “I have always loved science more than money.”
Albert Einstein kept a portrait of Faraday on his study wall, alongside Newton and Maxwell. Physicist Ernest Rutherford said that given the scale and impact of Faraday’s discoveries, no honor was too great for his memory. Faraday founded the Royal Institution’s Friday Evening Discourses and was the main popularizer of its Christmas Lecture Series.
Born in Newington Butts, Surrey, in 1791, Faraday came from a poor family. His father, James, was a member of the Glasite Christian sect and had moved the family from Westmorland to London. Michael, the third of four children, had only basic schooling and taught himself. At 14, he apprenticed to a bookbinder, George Riebau. During his seven-year apprenticeship, he read widely, including Isaac Watts’s *The Improvement of the Mind*, and put its ideas into practice. He discussed science with peers at the City Philosophical Society and attended lectures. A book that particularly inspired him was Jane Marcet’s *Conversations on Chemistry*.
In 1812, at age 20, Faraday attended lectures by chemist Humphry Davy at the Royal Institution and by John Tatum. Tickets came from William Dance. Faraday sent Davy a 300-page book of notes from the lectures, and Davy responded favorably. In 1813, after Davy injured his eyesight with nitrogen trichloride, he hired Faraday as an assistant. When a Royal Institution assistant was dismissed, Davy recommended Faraday, who became Chemical Assistant on 1 March 1813. Soon after, Davy had Faraday prepare nitrogen trichloride samples, and both were injured in an explosion.

Michael Faraday was born on 22 September 1791 in Newington Butts, Surrey (now part of the London Borough of Southwark). His family was not well off. He had only the most basic school education and had to educate himself. At age 14 he became an apprentice to George Riebau, a local bookbinder and bookseller in Blandford Street. During his seven-year apprenticeship Faraday read many books, including Isaac Watts's The Improvement of the Mind, and he enthusiastically implemented the principles and suggestions contained therein. They met through their families at the Sandemanian church, and he confessed his faith to the Sandemanian congregation the month after they were married. They had no children. Faraday was a devout Christian; his Sandemanian denomination was an offshoot of the Church of Scotland. Well after his marriage, he served as deacon and for two terms as an elder in the meeting house of his youth. His church was located at Paul's Alley in the Barbican. This meeting house relocated in 1862 to Barnsbury Grove, Islington; this North London location was where Faraday served the final two years of his second term as elder prior to his resignation from that post. Biographers have noted that 'a strong sense of the unity of God and nature pervaded Faraday's life and work.'
