Charles K. Kao, a Hong Kong electrical engineer, was awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics for his foundational work on transmitting light through glass fibers for communication. In the 1960s, while at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories in Harlow, England, Kao developed methods to pair glass fibers with lasers for sending digital data, a breakthrough that enabled the evolution of the Internet and the World Wide Web.
