Brahmagupta was an Indian mathematician and astronomer born in 598 CE in Bhillamāla, located in the region of Gurjaradesa (modern Bhinmal, Rajasthan). He was the son of Jishnugupta and a Hindu of the Shaivite tradition. Bhillamāla served as the capital of the second-largest kingdom in western India and was a prominent center for mathematical and astronomical study. Brahmagupta became an astronomer of the Brahmapaksha school, one of the four major schools of Indian astronomy, and studied the five traditional Siddhantas as well as the works of earlier astronomers including Aryabhata I, Varahamihira, and others. At age thirty, in 628, he composed the Brāhmasphuṭasiddhānta, a theoretical treatise of twenty-four chapters and one thousand eight verses in the ārya metre. This work, a revised version of the received Siddhanta of his school, contained substantial original material covering astronomy as well as key mathematical chapters on algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and algorithmics. He later moved to Ujjaini, a major astronomical center, and at age sixty-seven wrote the Khaṇḍakhādyaka, a practical manual for students. He died in 668 CE, likely in Ujjain. Brahmagupta is credited as the first person to formalize the concept of zero for nothing in mathematics. He also provided the first clear description of the quadratic formula, giving two equivalent solutions for quadratic equations in his main work. His mathematical advances were continued by Bhāskara II, who called him the gem of the circle of mathematicians. Commentaries on his works were written by Prithudaka Svamin, Lalla, and Bhattotpala.
