He published further papers in 1815 and 1821 expanding on these ideas. In 1820, he became a professor of physics at the University of Turin, but lost his position in 1823 due to his involvement in the revolutionary movement of March 1821. He was reinstated in 1833 and taught for another twenty years. Avogadro also held posts in statistics, meteorology, and weights and measures, introducing the metric system into Piedmont, and served on the Royal Superior Council on Public Instruction. He married Felicita Mazzé and had six children. His work was not widely accepted during his lifetime; a similar theory was proposed by André-Marie Ampère three years later.
