Starfield (video game)

A space-themed action RPG set in the Settled Systems.

Last updated

Bethesda Game Studios developed and Bethesda Softworks published the 2023 action role-playing game Starfield.[1] According to Bethesda, Starfield represents their first original intellectual property in a quarter-century.[2]

Making and release

Bethesda first announced Starfield in 2018, and its launch was postponed on multiple occasions.[3] Todd Howard, the game's director, characterized Starfield as "Skyrim in space".[2] Howard coined the term "NASApunk" to describe the game's look, which draws from real NASA technology.[4] Creation Engine 2 was the engine used for this, Bethesda's first title built with it.[5]

Development work in earnest started after Fallout 4's November 2015 launch.[6] Consumers could buy the standard version, a "Premium Edition", or a "Constellation Edition".[7]

What the cited sources add

The Verge noted that Starfield is notoriously hard on both CPUs and GPUs and requires an SSD to play.[8] The Verge also stated that Microsoft's xCloud was already getting saturated with Starfield players.[8] PC Gamer's review said Starfield shares DNA with Skyrim and Fallout 4 but ultimately falls short of both.[9] PC Gamer criticized space exploration as failing to feel like a grand adventure.[9]

Shacknews called the score "phenomenal" and said there were times the reviewer sat idle enjoying the original score.[10] Shacknews also stated that Starfield is the best-looking game Bethesda has made.[10]
