The Luminous Dead

Caitlin Starling's debut novel, *The Luminous Dead*, is a science fiction horror story published in 2019. It earned positive critical reception and a nomination for the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel.

The plot follows cave diver Gyre Price and her handler, Em. Gyre has taken a job exploring a dangerous, partially flooded cave system inhabited by alien Tunnelers that can kill instantly. She lied about her experience to secure the high pay, and must spend weeks inside a specialized suit, unable to remove it or eat normal food. Em monitors her, tasked with keeping Gyre safe and calm through drugs and other means, but Em is hiding secrets—most notably that she is the only handler on site, a role usually shared by multiple people to prevent burnout.

Starling designed the story to rely on more than shifting alliances and betrayals for tension, since the limited setting and cast restricted traditional tools. She added constraints like a lack of color (due to sonar-based reconstructions) and the suit blocking smell and touch. This let her explore what happens when a character's computer-simulated senses interpret the world differently than her brain would alone. She also drew on information about feeding tubes and colostomy bags from a family member with colon cancer, finding it an elegant, specific solution that led to grosser complications in the story.

The novel was first released in the United States on April 2, 2019, in paperback and ebook by Harper Voyager, with an audiobook narrated by Adenrele Ojo from HarperAudio. Harper Voyager published it in the United Kingdom on May 16 of the same year.

Critics praised the atmosphere and setting. Tim Pratt of *Locus* called the prickly relationship between Gyre and Em the heart of the book—a spiky mix of dependence, mutual suspicion, frustration, and fleeting connection. Nibedita Sen, writing for *Strange Horizons*, highlighted this relationship as a nuanced exploration of the bond that can form between two queer women under constant stress, terror, and isolation, with an extreme power imbalance, resulting in something complicated, messy, and occasionally touching.
