Dune: Imperium
A deck-building worker placement game set in the Dune universe.
In Dune: Imperium, each participant begins with a leader possessing unique asymmetric powers and a starting deck composed of ten cards, combining deck-building with worker placement mechanics.[1] Victory is achieved by the player who accumulates the highest number of victory points once either a participant hits ten or more points or the final conflict card has been played.[1]

Making and release
Dune: Imperium is the latest title from Dire Wolf Digital, makers of the popular card-driven dungeon crawler Clank!.[2] Dune: Imperium uses stylized art from the upcoming film, including the film’s logo and variations on the likenesses of actors such as Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Oscar Isaac.[2] The cast also includes characters only found in the novels so far.[2] Pre-orders for Dune: Imperium were expected to ship in early December, and the game cost $50.[2]
Late 2021 saw the publication of the Rise of Ix expansion.[3] A standalone title, Dune Imperium: Uprising, launched in 2023 and serves as either a substitute for or an alternative to the original game.[4]
What the cited sources add
The jury noted that although conflict is initiated on the battlefield at the end of each round, the game is not confrontational but highly interactive.[5] Hall also described the combat as feeling much more like bidding on an auction, which more closely models the Dune universe’s thematic elements like foldspace travel and cloning.[2] The Dune: Imperium app is a no-frills tool that helps set up the game for one or two players and automates the AI process.[2] Hall praised the companion application and the accessibility of the deck-building mechanism.[6]
According to the Spiel des Jahres jury, Dune: Imperium smartly improves upon standard worker placement by requiring a matching card from a player's hand to perform an action, and they commended its acquisition system, player interaction, thematic integration, and strategic depth.[5][7]
