Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2
Second RPG in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, removing random encounters.
Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 (超次元ゲイム ネプテューヌmk2, Chōjigen Geimu Neputyūnu mk2; lit. Super Dimensional Game Neptune mk2) is a 2011 role-playing video game developed by Idea Factory and Compile Heart, the second installment in the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise. The sequel brings back some characters while adding new ones, and its gameplay has been revised to eliminate random encounters. It also includes fresh maps, a completely new world, and cutscenes that have been improved beyond the original 2D visual novel style. A portable remaster, Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation, was released for the PlayStation Vita globally between 2014 and 2015, and later for Windows. The game was followed by Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory in 2012.
In dungeons, players can perform actions like Treasure Search and Symbol Attack. Pressing the O button scans for hidden treasure. Enemies now roam the map; when a player character enters their sight range, a red exclamation point appears (a nod to Metal Gear Solid), and the enemy gives chase. Hitting an enemy with a Symbol Attack gives the player's party an advantage and may even defeat it outright, though no rewards are gained in that case. If the player is approached from behind, a Back Attack starts the battle, giving the enemy the upper hand. Other dungeon items include Sharicite Symbols that trigger events, Save Points, Common Items, Gathering Points that yield ingredients for item synthesis, and a dungeon exit.
When the player contacts an enemy on the field or during an event, battle begins. Each character's turn is determined by their AP (Action Points). Normal attacks and items consume AP until it runs out, ending the character's turn. Characters also have SP (Skill Points) for using skills or activating HDD (Hard Drive Divinity) for CPUs (Console Patron Units, the goddesses) or CPU Candidates. Skills vary in range, effect, and power; one skill can be used per turn, ending the turn regardless of remaining AP. Activating HDD requires 100 SP, and once active, the character consumes SP until it depletes, then reverts. Up to 100 SP can be carried between battles.
Movement is shown by a blue circle around the character, marking the area they can move within. Some normal moves shorten this circle. Turn order is controlled by the Agility stat—higher Agility means an earlier turn.

Lore & Background
As Nepgear travels, she befriends characters including Nisa, Gust, 5pb, Cave, and Falcom, as well as the other CPU Candidates. Together with the mascots' power, they free the captive CPUs and defeat ASIC members, but uncover a plot to revive Arfoire. The party ultimately defeats Arfoire in the Gamindustri Graveyard, and the CPUs destroy her for good. The four landmasses—Planeptune, Lastation, Lowee, and Leanbox—have undergone changes from the first game, with new NPCs and altered settings.
Reader's Guide
Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2 is significant for refining the franchise's gameplay by removing random encounters and introducing a symbol encounter system where enemies wander the map, allowing for strategic Symbol Attacks or Back Attacks. The battle system uses Action Points (AP) and Skill Points (SP), with a turn order based on Agility, and includes mechanics like Guard Break, combo editing (Rush, Heavy Hits, Break), and EX Finishes. The game also features the Chirper communication system, quests from the Guild that affect CPU Shares, item synthesis requiring Lily Ranks, and a Costume Canvas for editing Nepgear's HDD outfit. Its legacy includes a portable remaster, Re;Birth2: Sisters Generation, released for PlayStation Vita and Windows, and it was followed by Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory in 2012.
