The club's early history includes mergers of local clubs, culminating in the name 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1933. In the 1941–42 season, Kaiserslautern won the Gauliga Westmark title and was knocked out of the national final rounds by eventual champions Schalke 04. The club dominated the Oberliga Südwest in the 1950s, winning its first German championship in 1951 and a second in 1953. Five Kaiserslautern players were part of the West Germany team that won the 1954 FIFA World Cup. In 1997–98, Kaiserslautern became the only newly promoted team to win the Bundesliga title.
