Playing career
Armstrong spent the majority of his NHL career with the Los Angeles Kings. Drafted by the New York Islanders in the sixth round, 128th overall of the 1992 NHL entry draft, he played his first full NHL campaign in 2002–03 after eight years in the minors and NHL with the Islanders, Ottawa Senators, New York Rangers, and Kings. Most of his non-NHL time was in the American Hockey League and International Hockey League. During the NHL lockout he played in the Swiss National League A for SC Rapperswil-Jona, recording 17 points in 12 games. His statistically best season was 2006–07 with 44 points, seventh in Kings' points that year. He signed with the St. Louis Blues on September 8, 2009, finishing his final pro season under former LA King coach Andy Murray.
Coaching career
On April 11, 2012, Armstrong was named head coach of the Denver Cutthroats of the Central Hockey League. He is best known in Denver for being part of the Denver Grizzlies' 1994–95 Turner Cup championship, the team's only season in Denver; the Grizzlies later moved to Salt Lake City and became the Utah Grizzlies, and their success is widely credited for attracting the Quebec Nordiques to Denver, where they became the Colorado Avalanche. After two seasons as head coach, Armstrong was appointed team president.
