Lore & Background

The Wheelchair Restraint is a device created by John Kramer, a former engineer dying from an inoperable frontal lobe tumor. After a suicide attempt, John becomes psychopathic, furious at people willfully throwing away their lives. He creates lethal traps to punish and enlighten the self-destructive, forcing victims to inflict pain on themselves to escape. The Wheelchair Restraint is one such trap, designed to test Detective David Tapp.

The trap consists of a wheelchair with an explosive charge wired to trigger upon movement. The victim must remain perfectly still to avoid detonation. This trap reflects Jigsaw's philosophy: the puzzle piece symbol is meant to show the subject is missing a vital piece of the human puzzle—the survival instinct. The trap appears in the first film, Saw (2004), where Jigsaw's identity is revealed to be John Kramer, who had been posing as a bloodied corpse on the floor of the bathroom where Dr. Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight's test takes place.

Reader's Guide

Physically, the Wheelchair Restraint appears as a standard medical wheelchair modified with industrial steel plating and reinforced locking mechanisms. The chair is anchored to the concrete floor. Thick leather straps secure the victim's wrists, ankles, and torso. A large cylindrical explosive device is strapped to the backrest, facing inward. The trap is triggered by any significant movement or attempt to break free. Symbolically, this trap represents Jigsaw's test of the survival instinct. It forces the victim to overcome the primal instinct to fight, as fighting guarantees death. The trap appears exclusively in the original film, Saw (2004). It is one of the iconic traps from the series due to its direct connection to Jigsaw's vendetta against law enforcement and its role in revealing the depth of Jigsaw's reach.
