Development

Christophe Beck was initially hired to score the film in December 2014, but Lorne Balfe replaced him in March 2015. Balfe aimed to create a standalone soundtrack, as Terminator Genisys is neither a prequel nor a sequel, while still incorporating Brad Fiedel's iconic theme from The Terminator to nod to the past and bring it into the future. He described the score as a hybrid, featuring massive action cues alongside emotional cues to match the character development and the relationship between Sarah Connor and the Terminator. Balfe spent extra time on a cue called "Fate and Hope," and created themes for John Connor, the romantic relationship between Kyle and Sarah, and a "Terminator" theme using piano and three notes.

Songs

The soundtrack for Terminator Genisys includes a bonus track called "Fighting Shadows," a collaboration between Chinese pop singer Jane Zhang and rapper Big Sean. This song marks Zhang's first recording in English and Big Sean's first contribution to a feature film's music. Def Jam Recordings put it out on July 3, 2015. A music video for the track, directed and produced by Robby Starbuck, uses clips from the movie. Other songs heard in the film, such as "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones, "Love Runs Out" by OneRepublic, and "Bad Boys" by Inner Circle, do not appear on the soundtrack album.

Reception

James Southall of Movie Wave wrote that the score has its moments but is forgettable. Filmtracks.com noted that Balfe's habit of substituting film arrangements with his concept suites hurts the album, as the film versions of the "fate and hope" theme and the John Connor theme needed proper placement; the site suggested placing concept suites at the start or end. The score was widely distributed digitally, but a very limited commercial CD pressing became a top collectible within months, and fans circulated longer bootlegs of 90 minutes of score. The recording was described as generally dynamic, with synthetic strings, trumpets, and other soloists featured well. Thomas Glorieux of Maintitles found the music common and unoriginal, not feeling like Terminator music despite attempts to deliver typical anthems. Michael Gingold of Fangoria remarked that the new music by Lorne Balfe, part of the Hans Zimmer factory, is not distinctive.
