Background
The two Brazilian clubs had come through the same second-stage group, Group 3, which Atlético Mineiro won with São Paulo second. In the first leg Jádson put São Paulo ahead in the 9th minute before Ronaldinho and Diego Tardelli scored for Atlético, in front of 43,573. In Belo Horizonte Jô scored three times and Tardelli once; Luís Fabiano replied for São Paulo.
