Trove
A voxel sandbox with class-based combat and shared item collection.
Trove is a voxel-based sandbox game that takes inspiration from Minecraft, created and published by Trion Worlds. It launched on Windows and macOS in July 2015, followed by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions in March 2017, and a Nintendo Switch release in June 2021.
The story, while intricate, is outlined in trailers, wikis, and the game’s intro. Centuries ago, the Sun Goddess gathered everyone for a time of oldness, but the Moon Goddess and her Shadow Army attacked the crowd. To push back the darkness, the Sun Goddess shattered the realms with a great life force. However, the Shadows persisted, and only true heroes—starting with the player—can drive them off.
Development began with the game’s first reveal on November 13, 2012, when players could sign up for the Alpha. Closed Beta access launched on September 25, 2014, followed by a free weekend from October 24–26, 2014. Open Beta started on November 4, 2014, and console open beta began on December 13, 2016. Trove entered Closed Beta in China on March 27, 2017. Trion Worlds was acquired by Gamigo on October 22, 2018, and ceased operations four days later on October 26, 2018.
In gameplay, players choose from multiple classes, each with distinct play styles and abilities. After a brief tutorial, they arrive in the Hub, a central area with Portals that lead to different worlds tailored to progression stages. Each portal requires a minimum Power Rank to enter, with higher ranks granting access to harder worlds that offer better experience and loot. Portal colors indicate loot quality; for example, Red portals predominantly drop Legendary items but also have a chance for relic, resplendent, or shadow quality loot, with higher-level red portals increasing the odds of rarer types.
Only three equipable slot items—hats, weapons, masks, and banners—can be obtained by defeating hostile NPCs or opening reward chests after boss fights. These items form the loot drops. Players can also get skins for these items from a vendor table. Other equipable items, such as rings, costumes, tomes, allies, wings, mounts, boats, sails, flasks, fishing rods, mag riders, foods, and emblems, are obtained through crafting, the in-game store, trade NPCs, Mastery levels, or badges. Flasks restore health, and emblems modify their effects.
A key feature is the Collection system.

Reader's Guide
Trove's significance lies in its blend of Minecraft-inspired voxel building with RPG class systems and persistent progression. Players choose from 18 classes, each with unique abilities and play styles, and explore themed biomes such as Candoria, Neon City, and Jurassic Jungle. The game features a Hub zone with portals to increasingly difficult worlds, gated by a Power Rank requirement. Loot drops include hats, weapons, masks, and banners, while other equipment—rings, costumes, mounts, wings, and more—is obtained through crafting, the in-game store, trading, or mastery levels. A notable feature is the Collection: most non-loot-drop items, once activated, are added to an account-wide library, allowing any character to equip them. Items like rings, hats, weapons, masks, banners, and food are not shared and must be transferred manually. Players can trade via the Trading Post or Marketplace. The Loot Collector destroys items but adds their style to the library for vanity use, also providing resources. Character appearance can also be altered at the Barbershop. The Geode biome adds a hub area, three cave tiers, and a battle biome with special Leviathans and five-star dungeons. Trove's legacy includes its post-launch support across multiple platforms and its acquisition by Gamigo.
