Lore & Background
The game is set in contemporary Bolivia in July 2019, where the country has become destabilized by the Santa Blanca Cartel, a Mexican drug cartel led by the brutal boss El Sueño. The cartel has turned Bolivia into the world's largest producer of cocaine. In response, the Bolivian government established La Unidad, an elite special forces group, though a truce eventually formed between the two factions, with some Unidad personnel secretly working for the cartel. The United States deploys a Ghost Recon fireteam—consisting of team leader Nomad, vehicle specialist Midas, hacker Holt, and sniper Weaver—after a bomb targets the American embassy in La Paz and DEA agent Ricardo Sandoval is executed by the cartel.
Reader's Guide
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands is significant as the first open-world entry in the Ghost Recon series, featuring a large game world with diverse environments such as mountains, forests, deserts, and salt flats. It introduced a dynamic weather system and day-night cycle, with missions offering different tactical advantages depending on the time of day. The game emphasized player choice, allowing solo play with AI teammates or cooperative multiplayer with up to three other players. Its campaign involved dismantling the Santa Blanca Cartel by targeting four operational divisions—Influence, Security, Production, and Smuggling—across 21 provinces.
