Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint

A tactical shooter set in an open world with survival elements.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint is an online tactical shooter from Ubisoft Paris and Ubisoft. It came out on 4 October 2019 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, and later on 18 December 2019 for Stadia. As the eleventh game in the Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon series, it directly follows the story of 2017's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands. The action takes place on Auroa, a fictional chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean. Players control Lieutenant Colonel Anthony "Nomad" Perryman, a U.S. Special Operations soldier sent to look into trouble involving Skell Technology, a military contractor based on the islands. Critics gave the game mixed reviews, pointing out problems with its mechanics and mission design. It did not meet sales expectations and was a commercial disappointment. Ubisoft ended live service support on 5 April 2022, shortly after adding non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to the game.

Gameplay

Like Wildlands, Breakpoint is a tactical shooter set in an open world. It uses a third-person view, with an optional first-person view for aiming. Players are Nomad, a member of the fictional elite U.S. Army unit known as the Ghosts. The game world, Auroa, is larger than the one in Wildlands and has varied terrain that can be used for tactical advantages—players can slide down rocky slopes or use mud for camouflage. Travel options include air, land, and sea vehicles. The game launched with four character classes, with plans for more through updates. Each class has unique abilities; for instance, the panther class focuses on stealth and can throw smoke bombs. Players can switch classes during the game. To progress, they gather intelligence and can approach missions in different ways. Weapons include combat drones and rocket launchers, while stealth options let players silently take out enemies. New gear includes a blowtorch for cutting fences, sulfur gas grenades, and electromagnetic pulse grenades to disable drones and vehicles. Players can carry and hide corpses to avoid alerting enemies, and fallen teammates can be moved to a safe spot for revival. Many new features came from player feedback on Wildlands.

The game puts a bigger focus on survival than Wildlands. Enemies are more numerous and varied, and they can use the same weapons, skills, and equipment as the player. They react more realistically, and patrols actively search for the player.

Lore & Background

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint is set in the then-future year of 2025, six years after the events of Wildlands and one year after Future Soldier. The story takes place on Auroa, a fictional island in the South Pacific owned by billionaire entrepreneur Jace Skell, founder of Skell Technology. The island, designed as a hub for AI and drone technology, is occupied by a private military contractor called Sentinel under the command of former Ghost Lieutenant Colonel Cole D. Walker, who leads a rogue group known as the Wolves. The player assumes the role of Lieutenant Colonel Anthony 'Nomad' Perryman, a member of the elite Ghosts unit, who is deployed to investigate the sinking of the USS Seay and the communication blackout on Auroa. The insertion goes awry when drones down the helicopters, separating Nomad from his squad and leading to the execution of one teammate by Walker.

Reader's Guide

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint received mixed reviews from critics upon release, with criticism directed at its mechanics and mission design. The game failed to meet sales expectations and was a commercial disappointment. Live service support ended on 5 April 2022, shortly after Ubisoft added non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to the game. Despite these setbacks, Breakpoint expanded on the open world formula of its predecessor Wildlands, featuring a larger game world called Auroa with diverse landscapes and a greater emphasis on survival. New mechanics included resource crafting, injury management, and the ability to carry and hide corpses. The game initially launched without AI squadmates, but they were added as post-release content due to negative feedback. Breakpoint required a constant internet connection, even for single-player, and featured an Exploration mode that provided rough objective locations rather than precise markers. The game's competitive multiplayer mode launched at launch, with raids introduced after release.
