A persistent war where players drive all logistics and combat.

Foxhole (video game)

Foxhole is a cooperative sandbox massively-multiplayer action-strategy video game developed and published by Canadian video game company Siege Camp, based in Toronto, Ontario. It uses Unreal Engine 4 with an axonometric projection perspective similar to a conventional real-time strategy game. The game is notable for its persistent war system, where players join one of two factions and contribute to a conflict by gathering resources, manufacturing supplies, building fortifications, and fighting to capture enemy territory.

Lore & Background

Foxhole was conceived in early 2016 by Siege Camp, originally called Clapfoot Inc., after several small-scale mobile projects. The goal was to create a massively multiplayer war game in a persistent world where players drive all aspects of the war effort. Early concepts included a first-person perspective and turn-based gameplay, but a top-down view was chosen to emphasize strategy and collaboration. The setting is inspired by early 20th century warfare, though vehicle, weapon, and character designs are original rather than historical. Prototypes began in early 2016, leading to a pre-alpha public release in July 2016, initially supporting 64 players per server instance, later expanded to 120. The World Conquest game mode launched in March 2018 with 9 interlocking regions, later expanded to 53 regions.

Reader's Guide

Foxhole's significance lies in its player-driven economy and persistent war system, where every item used in combat—from weapons to fortifications—is manufactured by players from raw resources gathered from resource fields. The game features two factions, Colonials and Wardens, with distinct visuals and equipment, and a rank system based on commendations from other players rather than traditional progression. A day-night cycle (12 in-game hours per 30 real-time minutes) and an AI system that controls defensive structures when players are absent are central features. The game received media attention in late 2021 and early 2022 when the Logistics Organization for General Improvement (L.O.G.I.), a group of 1,800 players, organized a logistics strike after an open letter to Siege Camp demanding fixes to 11 issues went unanswered. The strike ended on March 1 following Update 48, which addressed many of the listed issues. The game's cooperative human element was highlighted by IGN's Lief Johnson, who noted enjoyment from watching many players work together.
