Canadian defenceman traded to San Jose Sharks in 2026.
Last updated
Darnell Nurse (born February 4, 1995) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Edmonton Oilers picked him seventh overall in the 2013 NHL entry draft, and he spent more than ten years with the Oilers before a trade sent him to the Sharks in 2026.
Early life
Nurse was born in Hamilton, Ontario. His father, Richard Nurse, played wide receiver for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League, and his mother, Cathy, played university basketball for the McMaster Marauders.
As a kid, Nurse played football, basketball, lacrosse, and hockey, but by high school he had dropped everything except hockey. His father worried about football injuries, and Nurse himself said he was "just no good" at basketball. By age 15, standing nearly six feet and weighing 176 pounds, he quickly became known as a strong, physical defenceman for the Don Mills Flyers minor team.
Major junior
The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds selected Nurse third overall in the 2011 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection. After two seasons there, the Oilers drafted him seventh overall in 2013.
On July 25, 2013, Edmonton signed him to a three-year entry-level contract and sent him back to the Greyhounds for the 2013–14 season, where he was named team captain. He posted a career-high 50 points in 64 games. After the Greyhounds’ season ended, he joined the Oilers’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons, playing four regular-season games and three playoff games.
Edmonton Oilers
Nurse made the Oilers’ opening-night roster for 2014–15 but sat out the first three games. He made his NHL debut on October 14, 2014, in a 6–1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. After two games, the Oilers sent him back to the Greyhounds on October 17. He started the 2015–16 season with Edmonton’s new AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, and was recalled after six games.
On October 27, 2015, he scored his first NHL goal in a 4–3 loss to the Minnesota Wild. On March 10, 2016, he was suspended three games for being the aggressor in a fight with San Jose Sharks defenceman Roman Polák. He finished his rookie season with 69 games for the Oilers and nine for the Condors.
On December 12, 2016, Nurse had ankle surgery that kept him out for up to 12 weeks. He returned after 35 games on February 26, 2017, in a 5–4 loss to the Nashville Predators.
Lore & Background
Nurse grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, the son of former CFL wide receiver Richard Nurse and university basketball player Cathy Nurse. He played football, basketball, lacrosse, and hockey as a child but focused solely on hockey by high school.
Standing nearly 6 ft and weighing 176 lbs by age 15, he established himself as a strong, physically assertive defenceman with the Don Mills Flyers minor hockey team. He was selected third overall by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the 2011 OHL Priority Selection and later named team captain for the 2013–14 season, scoring a career-high 50 points in 64 games.
Nurse made his NHL debut with the Oilers on October 14, 2014, and scored his first NHL goal on October 27, 2015. He served as an alternate captain for the Oilers alongside Leon Draisaitl starting in 2019. Over his tenure with Edmonton, he signed multiple contract extensions, including an eight-year, $74 million extension in 2021. On July 1, 2026, the Oilers traded Nurse to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Shakir Mukhamadullin and Zack Sharp.
Internationally, Nurse won bronze at the 2012 World U-17 Hockey Challenge and 2012 World U18 Championships, gold at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and 2015 World Junior Championships, and silver at the 2019 World Championship. He also played for Canada at the 2018 and 2026 World Championships.
