Sue Me

A defiant pop anthem born from a real-life lawsuit, marking a confident new direction for Carpenter's Singular: Act I.

"Sue Me" is a track from Sabrina Carpenter's third studio album, Singular: Act I, where it appears as the fourth song. Carpenter co-wrote it with Steph Jones, and Warren "Oak" Felder produced it alongside co-producers Trevor Brown and William Zaire Simmons. Hollywood Records put it out as the album's second and final single on November 9, 2018, and sent it to contemporary hit radio on January 8, 2019. The lyrics focus on the sense of freedom after leaving a toxic relationship, daring someone to try and stop the singer from enjoying life.

Carpenter wrote the song after her former music managers, Stan Rogow and Elliot Lurie, sued her in 2014 for unpaid commissions following her firing them. They claimed a share of revenue from her earlier albums Evolution and Eyes Wide Open. Carpenter has acknowledged this as the song's inspiration but hasn't commented further. A court ruling on May 23, 2018, favored Carpenter, allowing her to recover legal costs from Rogow and Lurie. Carpenter has described "Sue Me" as a track that embodies pure confidence and says it gave Singular: Act I its direction, standing apart from her earlier work.

The song was written in September 2017, after Carpenter finished the De Tour, by Carpenter, Felder, Jones, Brown, and Simmons. Felder produced it, with Brown and Zaire Koalo as co-producers; they also provided background vocals. Felder programmed the track, Koalo handled drum programming, and Felder engineered it at SuCasa Recording in Los Angeles, with Keith "Daquan" Sorrells as assistant engineer. Eric J. Dubowsky mixed it at Hercules St. Studios in Sydney, assisted by Tim Watt, and Chris Gehringer mastered it at Sterling Sound in New York City.

The music video, directed by Lauren Dunn, premiered on Carpenter's Vevo channel on November 16, 2018, after a snippet aired on TRL on November 9. It features Carpenter's friend, actress Joey King, and Sergio D'arcy Lane, and was shot in one day at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California—the same campus used for Zoey 101. The video's hair stylist, Scott King, noted on Instagram that filming took place on August 17, 2018. The visual has been compared to Legally Blonde for its similar storyline and characters, though Carpenter hasn't confirmed this. On December 14, 2024, the video was deleted and re-uploaded, but the re-upload was taken down within hours, and the original was restored on December 16.

Carpenter promoted "Sue Me" with live performances on its release day, including The Today Show and Live with Kelly and Ryan. It was the fourteenth song on the setlist for the Singular Tour, and she also performed it on Good Morning America's Summer Concert Series.

Lore & Background

The song's background is rooted in a real legal dispute. Carpenter wrote "Sue Me" after she was sued by her ex-music managers Stan Rogow and Elliot Lurie for allegedly not paying them commissions after she fired them in August 2014. They claimed they should have some of the revenue from Carpenter's previous two albums Evolution and Eyes Wide Open. Carpenter has confirmed this is the background, but has not commented on the situation. On May 23, 2018, the ruling was filed in favor of Carpenter and allowed recovery of legal costs from Rogow and Lurie. Carpenter also stated this song as representing pure confidence. Carpenter said that "Sue Me" was the first track that was giving a direction to the album because it was in a different lane than the other songs that she had written before. The song was written in September 2017, after Carpenter concluded the De Tour, by Sabrina Carpenter, Warren "Oak" Felder, Steph Jones, Trevor Brown and William Zaire Simmons. It was produced by Felder with Brown and Zaire Koalo as co-producers. Felder, Brown and Koalo did the background vocals while Felder programmed the track and Koalo handled the drum programming. Felder engineered the track at SuCasa Recording in Los Angeles with Keith "Daquan" Sorrells serving as an assistant engineer. The song was mixed by Eric J Dubowsky at Hercules St. Studios in Sydney and Tim Watt served as a mix assistant. The song was mastered at Sterling Sound in New York City by Chris Gehringer.
