Music and lyrics

The album's twelve tracks include four from Carpenter's debut EP. Musically, Eyes Wide Open is a folk-pop and teen pop record with acoustic and country styles, also incorporating pop rock, power pop, and Hawaiian folk influences. Carpenter wrote four of the songs. The title track, “Eyes Wide Open,” has a darker mood and addresses self-discovery; Carpenter has said her favorite lyric on the album is its opening line. “Can't Blame a Girl for Trying” is an acoustic guitar-pop folk song about being foolish in love and making mistakes. “The Middle of Starting Over” features country pop influences and deals with moving on and starting fresh; it has been compared to Taylor Swift's early work. “Darling I'm a Mess,” the first song recorded for the album, is a Hawaiian folk song co-written by Meghan Trainor about being friend-zoned. “White Flag” is a folk-pop guitar-driven ballad about change and impermanence. The closing track, “Best Thing I Got,” is a piano-driven pop song with jazz influences about love and freedom.

Critical reception

Brian Cantor of Headline Planet gave a positive review, noting that the album's loose structure and personality allow Carpenter to establish her own identity. He felt that more heavily produced songs, particularly “Eyes Wide Open” and “We'll Be the Stars,” worked against her strengths. Taylor Weatherby of Billboard praised “We'll Be the Stars” as one of Carpenter's best songs, highlighting its vulnerable side.
