Plot

Colonel Valentin Lebedev (Oleg Menshikov) commands the military response after an alien spaceship crashes in Moscow. His daughter Yulia (Irina Starshenbaum) becomes romantically involved with the alien Hekon (Rinal Mukhametov), while her former boyfriend Artyom (Alexander Petrov) acts as the main antagonist. Hekon, a member of an advanced humanoid race, had been traveling incognito for research when a meteor shower damaged his ship, the Sol. The Russian Air Force mistook the vessel for a NATO spy satellite and fired missiles, causing it to crash into buildings and kill hundreds. Yulia and Artyom had been at a meteor-watching event where Yulia's friend Svetlana (Darya Rudenok) died. The government isolates the crash site, imposes a curfew, and lets the ship repair itself. Yulia, Artyom, and friends sneak into the area, beat Hekon, and steal his armor. Later, Yulia retrieves the alien and brings him to a classmate called Google (Evgeniy Mikheev) for help. Hekon explains he seeks a device called Shilk, which enables space travel and attracts water. A wristband forms on Yulia's wrist that manipulates water. Hekon is mistaken for a drug addict and taken to a police station. Meanwhile, Artyom and his friends drive to inform Colonel Lebedev about the armor, but encounter a crowd angered by water rationing caused by the ship absorbing water. Ruslan (Nikita Kukushkin) provokes a riot; Artyom is hit by a baton and taken to the station without revealing his discovery.

Production

Principal photography began in November 2015. Shooting occurred in secrecy across Moscow, mainly in Chertanovo, and at Ministry of Defense facilities using Russian military equipment such as armored personnel carriers, helicopters, Uranus-6 robots, drones, GAZ Tigr vehicles, Typhoon armored vehicles, and the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov. Visual effects were handled by 255 artists from Main Road Post, who had worked on films including Metro, August Eighth, Wanted, Stalingrad, and The Duelist. Effects work took about a year and a half, with the spacecraft crash scene considered the most difficult.

Reception

Attraction was a commercial success, grossing 44 million RUB on its opening day and remaining at the top of the Russian box office for weeks. Its total gross exceeded 1 billion RUB, roughly three times its budget. Russian media outlets such as Afisha, Kommersant, Mir Fantastiki, KG-portal, and The Hollywood Reporter gave significant positive reviews.
