Bayan (accordion)

Chromatic button accordion developed in the Russian Empire.

Last updated

Its internal construction differs from Western instruments, giving it a distinct tone color and a fuller bass sound.[1][2]

How it changed

The bayan is becoming a standard instrument, though piano keyboard and Western chromatic accordions remain in use.[2] Soviet composers Vladislav Zolotaryov and Sofia Gubaidulina wrote notable compositions for the bayan.[1] Slovak composer Peter Machajdík composed a Concerto for Two Bayans and Orchestra.[1] That concerto premiered on 4 June 2009 in Bydgoszcz, Poland, performed by Acco Duo with the Symphony Orchestra of the Pomeranian Philharmonic.[1]

The Barynya.com account states that nothing compares to the sound of the bayan.[2] Accordion virtuosi who perform classical and contemporary classical music frequently select the bayan due to its range and purity of tone.[1][2] Contemporary works by composers Yehuda Yannay and Anthony Galla-Rini have been premiered by Russian bayan virtuoso Stas Venglevski.[3]

What the maker and period sources say

The Barynya.com account notes that the bayan differs from Western chromatic button accordions in construction details.[2] It also states that chin switches and converter bass switches are common on professional caliber accordions of various types.[2] The Barynya.com account lists performances by bayan virtuosos including Victor Danilochkin and Gennady Gutkin.[2]
