Mimosa salad

Festive layered salad with egg yolk mimicking mimosa flowers.

Last updated

Mimosa salad, known in Russian as салат мимоза, is a dish served on special occasions. Its core ingredients are cheese, eggs, canned fish, onion, and mayonnaise. The salad takes its name from its visual similarity to mimosa flowers resting on snow, which is created by crumbling and sprinkling boiled egg yolk over the top. Because it became so popular in the USSR and remains so in post-Soviet countries, many different versions of the recipe have developed.

To prepare a classic version, ingredients are arranged in layers inside a bowl, with mayonnaise spread between each layer. Typical layers include drained, deboned, and mashed canned fish (such as salmon, Pacific saury, mackerel, or trout); finely crumbled hard cheese; coarsely grated boiled egg whites (sometimes whole hard-boiled eggs or just the yolks are used instead); finely chopped onion; and finely crumbled boiled egg yolk sprinkled on top as the final layer. Additional ingredients sometimes used are coarsely grated frozen butter, coarsely grated boiled potatoes, and coarsely grated boiled carrots.
