About the Little Red Riding Hood

A Soviet musical sequel deconstructing the Little Red Riding Hood tale.

Last updated

About the Little Red Riding Hood is a 1977 Soviet two-part musical TV movie directed by Leonid Nechayev. It serves as a sequel to the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood, drawing on ideas from Charles Perrault. The film deconstructs the original fairy tale by portraying the wolves as human-like characters, akin to a family of forest hermits or a clan of bandits.

Plot

A full year has passed since the woodcutter killed the wolf in the classic story. That wolf left behind a mother, a son, and friends who all want revenge on Little Red Riding Hood. The dead wolf’s mother pays his friend, Lean Wolf, to take her other son, Fat Wolf, and together they plan to capture the girl. Lean Wolf tricks Little Red into thinking her grandmother is sick again.

Believing this, she heads through the forest to visit, where she meets the wolves in disguise and other travelers. Every scheme the wolves come up with to catch her fails. They change into many different costumes to seem friendly, but they get too caught up in her games and never succeed. The dead wolf’s son, Wolf Cub, prefers reading books over revenge.

He tells his grandmother that Little Red did nothing wrong to deserve his father’s attack. He wants no part of the vengeful plan. Angry at his defiance, his grandmother burns his book. Wolf Cub cries and runs away from home.

During her journey, Little Red meets a spoiled young boy who wants to own her so he can play with her whenever he likes. He locks her in a room, but Lean Wolf and Fat Wolf rescue her, now dressed as elegant women who claim to be her grandmother’s friends. They actually wait with a sack to grab her. Wolf Cub takes the sack and stops their plan.

He tries to warn Little Red that her grandmother is not really sick, but she does not understand and keeps going. Fat Wolf starts to like Little Red and no longer wants to capture her. Later, a shepherd boy who helped the wolves tells Little Red that her companions are wolves. Upset, she trades clothes with the shepherd and tricks Lean Wolf into admitting who he is.

When the wolves ask her to get water, she brings them a sleeping potion made from poppies, and they fall asleep. Wolf Cub fights the shepherd boy and gives Little Red her clothes back.
